Book Review: "Fashion Brands" Second Edition

Yesterday, in spirit of wanting to get through one New York day without spending what most people spend in a week, we parked it in Barnes and Noble and read all afternoon. In the end we got a lot of fashion and we only had to spend $40 to bring it home with us. We haven't finished the book so far but the second edition of "Fashion Brands: Style From Armani to Zara", released this year, is a book we can already say we do recommend. To be completely honest, we usually gravitate towards old fashioned fiction when it comes to our extracurricular reading but this book might just turn that around for us. Nicholas Coleridge, the managing director of Conde Nast in Britain, called the book "An essential primer for anyone wanting to make it big in the fashion biz." and so far, it seems to live up to that reputation. One chapter we found particularly insightful told the story of how Net-a-Porter came to be. If that doesn't pique your interest, we don't know what will. Our only regret is that we didn't buy the book online, right now you can purchase it Amazon.com for nearly half the cost. Alas, we should have known better.

Kate Moss

>> ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL —Kate Moss was photographed at a photoshoot Saturday afternoon in LA, and it looks like it's for the Spring 2009 Just Cavalli campaign, making it her second campaign for the label in a row.  The dress she was captured slipping in and out of is from the Spring 2009 Just Cavalli runway, and it was confirmed yesterday that she "just shot" the campaign in LA with Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, so put two and two together and voila, pictures of the campaign in the making.

Stella McCartney Resort/Spring 2009 Look Book

Imagine our surprise when we received an abbreviated version of this look book in the mail and it was titled "Stella McCartney Spring 2009".

Imagine our surprise when we received an abbreviated version of this look book in the mail and it was titled "Stella McCartney Spring 2009". This was just a week or two after the Stella McCartney Spring 2009 show had commenced in Paris and we were amazed at the speediness of the look book (never mind that we receive the paper artifacts in the first place--another topic entirely). Upon further inspection we realized that the looks we recognized were not those which we had seen on the runway in Paris but in those which we remember affront a grassy backdrop of some sort....and then it hit us, "Ohhhhh, this is Resort". Well this midseason offering, eighty-odd looks in all, is hardly something to squeeze between two proper seasons and so McCartney has titled this collection "Spring" and her collection that we saw in Paris "Summer". Although this will undoubtedly jumble everyone's tagging a bit, we think the re-titling completely appropriate. To top it all off we can't even claim that the collection is in need of editing--we think this plethora of pieces will suit the Stella McCartney customer just fine.

Spring 2009 Trend Report: Sheer Bondage

Well, now you know what your little black dress should look like this Spring 2009--it was all about sheer, body-con frocks at fashion week this season.

Well, now you know what your little black dress should look like this Spring 2009--it was all about sheer, body-con frocks at fashion week this season. Although "sheer" and "bondage" were super trends in their own right, they came together more than once in the form of cocktail dresses. Some were on the looser side, like Christopher Kane's version, and others were explicit in their allusion, like the one from Thakoon. Alexander Wang and Rodarte did the look best, but that's probably because both brands play with the aesthetic on a regular basis. Whichever you prefer remember to put this on your shopping list--bonus points if you find it early and it doubles as your go-to holiday frock.
