The Picture of Dorian Leigh

>> If a five foot, five inch woman tried to be a model these days, she'd hardly be taken seriously. Sixty-odd years ago, it was a different story . . . at least for Dorian Leigh, it was.

Ms. Leigh, who passed away earlier this week at 91 after battling Alzheimer's, was widely considered one of the world's first supermodels. In fact, her life was full of firsts: she was one of the first models to be known by name, and after her own modeling career, she opened what is called the first modeling agency in Paris.

Though Dorian started her career late — when she was 27 in 1944, she met with Diana Vreeland, told her she was 19, and landed a Harper's Bazaar cover right then and there — she appeared on seven Vogue covers in the 1940s, and claimed to be earning a whopping $300,000 a year.

She played muse to numerous bold name photographers: Cecil Beaton, Richard Avedon, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Irving Penn — the last of whom she had an affair with, and may have been the inspiration for Holly Golightly in Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's. But she didn't take her job too seriously, declaring in 1953: "I'd rather have a baby than a mink coat."

>> THE ZEITGEIST —No names have been named, but word is that a lot of young, up-and-coming labels may not be showing in September at New York Fashion Week.  If they do show, the scale of the presentation will be intimate, rather than big and bold; the fledgling labels, unsurprisingly, are the ones hurting the most in these hard economic times.

Giorgio Armani

>> ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL —Carrying on her reign at Giorgio Armani —she appeared in the brand's Pre-Fall 2008 ads — Du Juan is joined by Jessica Stam in a dark, blunt crop for Fall 2008.  The dark, moody photos were shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, but look very inspired by Paolo Roversi, rather than like their normal crisp, color-saturated fare.

Cuffington Gives Props To Tessellations

As with any pseudo-adolescent fashion trend, a complimentary You Tube video is required.

As with any pseudo-adolescent fashion trend, a complimentary You Tube video is required. So while reading Network Partner, Cuffington's blog post on the tessellation patterns seen in the Marc by Marc Jacobs menswear collection, she rounded up a video that could have only been produced for high school Geometry students. Yes, it is that good. Aside from her funny findings, Cuffington rightly points out a trend that can come under the heading of geometric, although tessellations, as she points out, have no gaps and no overlaps in their patterns--so technically they deserve their own analysis. Below, we've rounded up some summer tessellation patterns (we had to sift through the search term 'geometric' to find them--if that should give you an idea of their position as being a trend within a trend) on frocks and whatnot. It's Thursday, go get goofy.

July 2008 Vogue Italia: The Aftermath

>> Although it's too soon to tell what kind of lasting impact the all-black issue of Vogue Italia might have, preliminary indications that it had an effect are there.  Just this morning, Fashionista reported that Lancome signed VI model Arlenis Sosa Pena as their new face.  If true, she joins Daria Werbowy in what is sure to be a lucrative, high-profile position for the company — outstanding for a newcomer like Arlenis.  More big news this morning for the July VI  flock: Topshop announced VI cover girl Jourdan Dunn, along with Karlie Kloss, Kori Richardson, and Amanda Laine, as their Fall 2008 campaign girls — another sure-to-be-well-paying, high-profile campaign (images below).

Finally, The Imagist recently reported that advertising clients are already asking casting agents to be more "inclusive" for their future ad campaigns, as a result of all the attention Vogue Italia has gotten.  The industry appears to be moving in the right direction, but only time will tell.  Now, how about some more attention for girls like Lakshmi Menon and Daul Kim?
