One Two Buckle My Shoe?

Click it or ticket has been a national slogan for safer driving for some time.
Click it or ticket has been a national slogan for safer driving for some time. But the way we seemed to be obsessed with buckling up in the fashion business you could be forgiven for thinking retailers underwrote the campaign. As community member Shoeblog points out, ornate buckled sandals are a favorite of New York City women this summer and Bill Cunningham has the photos to prove it. The trouble is that these buckled shoes, with or without heels, have made the rounds for so long that even our favorites like Dolce Vita are now on sale and every copy cat on the block from Steve Madden to Guess has shipped a facsimile to market. So while everyone else is saying one two buckle my shoe we are sorely tempted to say three four shut the door on this trend. And if you really want a nice buckled shoe? Can we suggest these Manolo Blahnik Buckle Anklestraps? We will just leave you with a variety of choices below and you can do whatever feels right.

The Black Boot Delivers

Staples has always been our go-to space for the coming of a season.

Staples has always been our go-to space for the coming of a season. Being that we are more or less, total nerds, the concept of 'basics', 'must-haves', and, well, 'staples' have always been of keen interest to us. When we were little, going to Staples (the store) meant fresh everything--from never been sharpened pencils to pristine notebooks. We have to say that we get a similar feeling now, when we start imagining our fall wardrobe. After we makes lists of what we'd like and edit our closet a little bit, we go after the staples. Putting away a new leather jacket or pair of trousers feels almost like it did to put that loose leaf in our trappers. That said, on our list this season is a new pair of black boots. If there's anything that's making its rounds on e-commerce right now its these items, so now is the time to scope out what requires replenishing. From motorcycle to riding boots, the variations of black boots are diverse but, overall, we're noticing high rises (right under the knee and right over) and sleek, seamless shapes. Black boots with a sheen (mostly by way of patent leather) are also popular as are the dipped cuff that we see in riding boots. Sigh, if only everything were as simple as it is at the beginning of a season, or first page of a notebook.

Sustainability of the Fashion Industry Chain: Crop to Shop

Sustainability has become a buzzword in its own right in the fashion industry.
Sustainability has become a buzzword in its own right in the fashion industry. In a business whose dominant goal is the ever changing world of trends, the idea of sustainability is one that is sure to ruffle a few feathers (ones that aren't going to just grow back mind you). Worn Through pointed out a conference titled Sustainability of the Fashion Industry Chain: Crop to Shop. This international conference being held in New Delhi, India on November 28-29, 2008 is accepting abstracts through August 15. Abstracts for papers are invited for the following themes: * Design interventions and Sustainability * Fashion Materials and Sustainability * Sustainable production processes, technologies and ethical issues * Sustainable consumption and retail * Policy and Environment We are particularly interested in the textile aspect of this conference. The materials of fashion are certainly one of the easiest places we can make an immediate impact. When the big guns like Premier Vision continue to add organic and sustainable sourced weavers to their roster there is certainly a market interest. Whether fashion can be sustainable or not as an industry remains to be seen, but certainly the nitty gritty of what we do in terms of textiles, sourcing and manufacturing has much to learn from the wider sustainability movements. And because we just can't do a post without suggesting a little something we have organic and theoretically sustainable (its in their promotional copy, what does it mean, who nows, go to the conference!) garments from Linda Loudermilk, Beau Soleil, and Viridis Lux

Tuck into A Tunic

The tunic is a silhouette whose popularity has waxed in recent years thanks to a certain socialite and a popular television host. With August just around the corner the tunic is an easy end of summer purchase. A bright tunic just begs to go over a ratty bathing suit feeling worn from too many trips to Montauk or your friend's rooftop pool(or wait, is it our thighs that need the trompé l'oiel). Community member Season Five Style however is already thinking towards fall with her tunics. Repurposing old dresses to create a tunic and pant combination is on her agenda for Fall. Alternations obviously make more sense if you hope to find a tunic that works in fall colors, but if you aren't up for a little DIY or tailoring fun, we think there is no reason not to enjoy summer tunics right now. Some fresh Pucci over a nice khaki pant ought to keep the idea serviceable through September. But honestly its August and all we want to do is throw on a terry tunic and hit the beach. Thinking ahead to fall is far too taxing a project.
