Erin Wasson Aims to Put the Chic Back in Skater Chick

Erin Wasson Aims to Put the Chic Back in Skater Chick

>> It looks like Erin Wasson doesn't need to work with Alexander Wang anymore: She's got her own line to worry about. She's signed a three-year deal with skate and surf brand RVCA to produce Erin Wasson for RVCA, which is getting good reviews already — Opening Ceremony has already snapped up the Spring 2009 collection.

We're talking about the model who has a half-pipe in her backyard, so it's no surprise that she chose to do low-cut cotton tanks ($55), miniskirts, frayed denim cut-offs ($230), a silk button-down emblazoned with tiny thunderbolts, and a blazer with a zipper running up the back, all aimed at girls who skate.  In fact, she straight up said: "I’m going to get my rocks off seeing girls in California skating around wearing my clothes more than I think I will seeing it in the fashion world."

As for the Low Luv-Bliss Lau jewelry controversy, Erin simply told WWD: “I have the utmost respect for Bliss Lau. I admire and appreciate what she has done for the jewelry industry.” Guess that's as good of an answer as we're going to get.

Agyness Deyn

W's September 2008 Bizarre Bazaar Fiasco

>> Is Liz Tilberis rolling in her grave right now?

>> Is Liz Tilberis rolling in her grave right now? Her iconic September 1994 Harper's Bazaar cover of Nadja Auermann photographed by Patrick Demarchelier has been swiped and reinterpreted for the September 2008 cover of W, featuring Kate Hudson as photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

The resemblance is far too uncanny to be a coincidence, what with the same blonde hair, light eyebrows, heavy cat-eye makeup, piercing blue eyes, and dark lipstick framed with a collar of blue all in common.  Of all the months to choose, wouldn't the big September issue be one you'd want to get creative with?

Chloe Cropped Cardigan

We're not going to patronize you by asking rhetorical questions about whether a $365 dollar sweater is 'worth' it.

We're not going to patronize you by asking rhetorical questions about whether a $365 dollar sweater is 'worth' it. Let's just call a spade a spade and say that you have the money to spend on such things, you don't, you happened to be first in line to the sample sale, or you wait until it's twenty percent off and buy it online. Anyway, we know it's somewhat boring of us to be exited about a neon pink cardi that looks like something you might find at the Salvation Army, but we can't help ourselves. Truth is, this cardigan, over some wild frock or pair of six inch heels, would get more mileage than anything. In the winter, when long, heavy layers are so necessary, having a bright something to cozy up to is always welcome. To us, this looks like one of those pieces that you put on one freezing cold morning and think yourself, "You know, I'm really glad I ended up buying this." Now, invest in some of the rich indigos from Chloe's Fall 08 collection and you've really made a wise investment. The combination or navy, neon pink, and pale skin almost makes us ready to put our shorts and light frocks in storage and gear up for the long winter.

Friday Indulgence: The Thursday Version

We're a little excited for the weekend to be here and thought we'd just get this out of the way.

We're a little excited for the weekend to be here and thought we'd just get this out of the way. We're going to suggest you take tomorrow off completely. We know, we know--you have to 'work', but hear us out. First of all, if you're anything like us you've been working all summer, writing/reading/dreaming about going away from behind your desk. That, if you ask us, is not okay. Especially with the insanity of fashion week quickly approaching. We're going to need to be well-rested because we're going to have to absorb a lot of information (and champagne) and someone along the line will snap and scream in our faces or do something else completely unladylike and declasse. These are things you need to prepare for. To that end, if in New York, we've got you covered. Today marks the start of a nice little sample sale with brands like Form, Jenny Yuen, Whistle & Flute, and Fremont. The sample sale includes silk jersey dresses that were 600 and now hover around 100 and it's in Nolita of all places (170 Elizabeth Street). So, get up late, go there at noon when it opens, and grab lunch in the neighborhood thereafter. Later on, you know, that whole bicoastal Opening Ceremony Olympics party gets underway. The Friday night party is private (cough, cough, 8808NYC@openingceremony.us) and it goes from 7-10. After that, grab a bottle of wine, a kick ball, and some friends and go to the park. Parks at night are what summer is all about. Especially when you're wearing something you just got at an end-of-season sample sale and it's all in celebration of the Olympics.

Fashion In 50 Seconds 8/7/08

Looks like Odin isn't the only one to open a shop for the ladies.
Looks like Odin isn't the only one to open a shop for the ladies. Greenpoint's Alter (one of a dozen reasons people say Greenpoint is 'up-and-coming') is opening a ladies shop called Alter 140 tomorrow. Funny thing is, we were just over there yesterday, drenching in sweat and trying to find an office, and saw 140 but thought it was a mirage or a sign change or a mistake on our part for thinking it had previously been on the other side of the street. Looks like they're going e-commerce too. Pheobe Philo might be pulled in to takeover Celine. Everyone in Paris is on vacation all month but the rumor is that LVMH might bring Philo in as early as September. Looks like Ivana Omazic, Celine's current creative director and former consultant for Prada, Miu Miu, and Jil Sander, might just be out on the street after fashion week. The inaugural issue of WWD (1910) was pulled out of the archives just in time to amp up the romance before fashion week. A design assistant was thrown into the archives and told to come out with some content for a new 'Back In Time' feature. Nothing like asking a freelancer to put things into perspective. Scandinavian fashion is making itself more relevant by banding together in the name of sustainability. To this end, The Swedish Fashion Council, the Icelandic Fashion Council, Oslo Fashion Week, Helsinki Design Week and the Danish Fashion Institute will become the Nordic Fashion Association. Eva Kruse, executive director of the Danish Fashion Institute said, “We know that the fashion industry is one of the big sinners, not only in terms of the environmental impact from the production of textiles, but also because lots of textiles, jewelry and fashion are produced in low-cost countries, often in very poor conditions”. We hate to say this but if they keep calling people out like that, we think their coverage will remain strong.
