Our mother used to take us down a peg or two by adding to our quips of self satisfaction the succinct "that and 50 cents will get you on the subway," an adage we think Fatima Lopes might do well to hear. The Portuguese designer is simply lovely and her clothing is extremely accessible but really the subway, or in the case of Paris The Metro, may get you further.

But then we all rise to our level of incompetence and Fatima's collection of appealingly dull Spring 2009 clothing no doubt sells very well for her. But its an experience and success we would be careful to warn doesn't mean much. A turquoise halter dress here, a cut out bathing suit there, and maybe some pink capris and you have fashion that no one can really dislike but you would be hard pressed to think its worth much either. But she sure is pretty and boy she wears a bikini well. And thus we say that, and 50 cents, will get you on the subway.
