Critics Concerned Over Chiuri, Piccioli's Valentino-Approved "Imitation" Collection

>> Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, whose first collection for Valentino debuted yesterday seem to have the approval of the house's namesake.  Valentino Garavani, who sat front row with partner Giancarlo Giammetti, leapt to his feet as soon as the show was over, applauding: "They did a very good job.

>> Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, whose first collection for Valentino debuted yesterday seem to have the approval of the house's namesake.  Valentino Garavani, who sat front row with partner Giancarlo Giammetti, leapt to his feet as soon as the show was over, applauding:

"They did a very good job. It is a collection that is perfect for this very moment.  It was quite emotional to see all my clothes, done by these people who loved me for 12 years, and they are really sensational. They were always staying with me during my fittings of haute couture.”

But other members of the audience weren't so convinced about the collection, which "could have been sourced right out of the house pattern archive," in the words of WWD.

>> INSIDER WIRE —Narciso Rodriguez is joining the likes of J.Mendel, Yigal Azrouel, and Tommy Hilfiger in returning to the tents.  For the past six seasons, he has chosen to show elsewhere, but for Fall 2009, Bryant Park is his venue.  Perhaps he's aiming on having First Lady Michelle Obama, who's a fan of his work, as a guest, and wants the security the tents provide?  They've had experience hosting former First Lady Laura Bush, plus Secret Service, last February, after all.  [WWD]*image: source

>> Stella McCartney marked the end of couture last night by debuting two things — her new Paris flagship (which actually opened in November) and a Cartier sapphire and diamond pendant that her dad gave her mom in the '70s and just passed onto her.  Joining her in celebration were Lara Stone, who recently moved to London, Stefano Pilati, Heidi Mount, Daphne Guinness, Lily Donaldson, and the ever-goofy Sasha Pivovarova, who in addition to her book for Prada, has now been invited to illustrate a children's book for Karl Lagerfeld.  There was fun to be had by all, including Francois-Henri Pinault, who joined in the game of "Who am I?," and ran around with Suzy Menkes and the rest of the bunch, cigarette rolling paper stuck to their foreheads.*image: source

A little piece of news appeared in our inbox this morning...Ports 1961 will be looking to India for inspiration this Fall 2009. The brief note proclaimed the collection would be inspired by "the Mughal courts of India", which means the collection should take on a rather formal, aristocratic vantage point. Ports 1961, established in 2004, is a luxury brand which focuses on a different culture or geographic region each season. From Tanzania to Iceland, Ports has been there. At left, a sketch from the upcoming India-inspired collection.

>> THE MODELIZER —It was good to see Freja Beha Erichsen back on the runway after she skipped out on Milan and Paris last season, allegedly with Catherine McNeil.  Here's another tidbit for McBeha conspiracists — Freja talking in the February 2009 i-D about her unnamed "love": "My love means the world to me!  We have a very special bond of understanding, friendship, and love, and I'm grateful to have such a beautiful person in my life to share the little and the bigs things with.  I can tell you that I've never been in such an easy relationship before .

>> There are few designers these days that can succeed without hopping onto the fashion train in some way — even Margiela sold a majority stake to Diesel — but Azzedine Alaia has done just that.  After all these years, he still remains a mystery — he has no website, and as The Imagist points out — "no seasonal shows, no advertising, no freestanding boutique network, very little retail outlets, and product that is about its own consistent identity, not the whims of a fashion moment."  Seeing his Spring 2009 lookbook, shot by Willy Vanderperre with Kasia Struss, seems like such a treat — mostly because of his elusiveness, but also because the black velvet gown he dressed Penelope Cruz in for the SAG Awards last weekend really whets the appetite.*image: source

>> ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL —Cult favorite Tim Walker — known for his whimsical, colorful fashion photography — has a few new projects on hand.  He's said to have a couple of films in the works for release this year, which means we could have another Wes Anderson, Tim Burton, or Michel Gondry-type auteur on our hands, and he also snapped Acquascutum's Spring 2009 campaign.  He and longtime set design collaborator, Shona Heath, came up with the concept of kissing couples dressed in the brand's bestselling AquaMac based on Aquascutum archive images.
