2009 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Unveiled: Anja Rubik, Chanel Iman, and Anna Jagodzinska Work It

>> Abbey Lee Kershaw wasn't feeling well backstage, neither was Eniko Mihalik, but they pulled it together to walk in the 2009 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, which taped today in New York City — on a big, sparkly V-shaped runway — and will air on CBS Dec.

1. Many of the girls chatted about what they had for breakfast — coffee and fruit for many — but Anja Rubik, who was convinced to walk the show for the first time by good friends (and fellow walkers) Mayna Linchuk and Caroline Trentini, admitted: "I've decided this will be my starving day today."

This year's big surprise?  Heidi Klum decided to walk for the twelfth show in a row, after all, six weeks after giving birth to her fourth child. Adriana Lima, on the other hand, who gave birth Sunday, sat this one out; Emanuela de Paula and Flavia Oliveira, rumored to walk, were also nowhere to be seen.

The show features five sections of twelve outfits each — this year's themes are Star Trooper, All Aboard, Pink Planet, Enchanted Forest, and Romantic Journey. As show stylist Charlotte Stockdale explains it: “We came up with the idea of this girl who lands from outer space in Paris. She gets on a train that comes to a halt in Pinkland, where pink girls get on and off. Then they go into this fairy-tale forest and little lady bugs and butterflies land on them and vines grow up on their clothes. Then, there’s Tick-Tock Time; the wings in this section are based on clocks — there’s one modeled after a pocket watch with metallic feathers. And she ends up in this regal realm of princess-ness, where the wings have Swarovski jewels and peacock feathers.”

Zac Posen, Alexander Wang, Carine Roitfeld (in Tom Ford for Yves Saint Laurent Fall 2002), and Patrick Demarchelier were all in attendance, and Chanel Iman tossed her handbag into the audience as she walked.

Shopping: Draped Party Dresses

Nothing says festive evening quite like a few sequins, velvet animal print, and draped detailing.

Nothing says festive evening quite like a few sequins, velvet animal print, and draped detailing. To help you decide what to wear now that your events calendar is filling up, we've picked our eight favorite cocktail party looks in the gently draped category (which is pretty flattering on most). From vibrant jewel-tones (Yves Saint Lauren), to anything-but-basic black (Michael Kors) and full-on sequins (Alexander Wang, Jason Wu, and La Petite S*****), here's to a well-dressed party season.

A Peek Backstage at the 2009 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show

>>  The likes of Chanel Iman and Dorothea Barth Jorgensen are already getting primped and prepped for the two tapings of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show this afternoon — final cut airs Dec. 1 on CBS — but it seems like mood is light.  When Caroline Trentini was asked for a photo backstage, she joked, "Sure! Want me to jump?"

Chanel Iman, meanwhile, prepared for her first Victoria's Secret catwalk by chatting with mentor Tyra Banks and doing a little research. “This might sound corny, but I went on YouTube and I did my homework by going and seeing the different years that Victoria’s Secret has had, the different shows and who did Victoria’s Secret, and studied their walks so that I can turn mine different from everyone else’s!”

Erdem Moralioglu has teamed up with Cutler & Gross to launch a debut sunglass collection for spring 2010. The round, Sixties-shaped frames will be available in black, black lace (very Erdem fall 2009), tortoise, and neutral stone.

Coming from the maestro of prints, we're inclined to splurge on Moralioglu's custom Kyoto print version (at left), which was inspired by a photograph of a Japanese fisherwoman and her brightly printed shorts.

Erdem for Cutler & Gross will retail for just under $500 at the current exchange rate.

The show themes, according to stylist Charlotte Stockdale, range from forest nymphs to futuristic femme fatales and fairy princesses:

“We came up with the idea of this girl who lands from outer space in Paris. She gets on a train that comes to a halt in Pinkland, where pink girls get on and off. Then they go into this fairy-tale forest and little lady bugs and butterflies land on them and vines grow up on their clothes. And she ends up in this regal realm of princess-ness, where the wings have Swarovski jewels and peacock feathers.”

There will be five sections in the runway show, each with 12 looks. Although the show is happening tonight in New York, it will air December 1 on CBS.

Julien MacDonald's Campy Christmas Tree

British designers Sir Paul Smith and Julien MacDonald have very different holiday decorating styles. According to WWD, Smith goes for a natural tree with just a few fairy lights and threatens to "tie and gag" the grandchildren if they add in any clashing colors. MacDonald, on the other hand, believes in a more festive look.

“I like to go for a camp tree, which I decorate with shells covered in glitter and fish dressed as drag queens with top hats and wigs," he told reporters at Tiffany's annual holiday party in London.

Alicia Keys Launches Jewelry Collection Inspired by Pseudoscience

Alicia Keys has founded a jewelry line, called The Barber's Daughters, with accessories designer Gisèle Theriault, whom Keys met backstage during one of her performances.

Alicia Keys has founded a jewelry line, called The Barber's Daughters, with accessories designer Gisèle Theriault, whom Keys met backstage during one of her performances.

The collection is made up of sterling silver and gemstone necklaces and bracelets inscribed with the poetry and prayers of Masaru Emoto. Emoto is a Japanese author best known for his conviction that  human thoughts can be directed towards water droplets which will in turn be beautiful or ugly when frozen, depending on the nature of the words, of course. His most recent book, "Messages from Water," contains photographs of these water crystals next to the words which transformed them.

According to Keys, the idea is to “to give people beautiful, unique pieces with messages that ignite them to find the best within."

“I fell in love with the individuality of the pieces, but more than that, the words that were written on them really resonated with the songwriter in me,” said Keys. “I knew at that moment, for the first time, that through a whole other medium I would be able to spread inspiration and that’s what got me started.”

Well, there's that, and she's always wanted to design accessories. Keys also states, "jewelry is a great first step." Meaning we can expect more product offerings from her newly created company, AK Worldwide.
