Tom Ford Financed 'A Single Man' Himself

>> Tom Ford apparently smells like vanilla and moves a certain way to highlight his best side —“I think of myself as a product," he told the New York Times.  But that's not all he wants to be seen as:

“I had one friend whom I’ve known for 15 years who said, ‘I’ve always thought of you as a beautiful black lacquered box with a platinum handle from the 1920s, but I never knew there was anything inside the box.' I was, like, ‘You’ve been my friend, and you did not know there was anything more than the surface?’”

For instance, Ford financed his first film, all $7 million of it, himself.  The subject matter of A Single Man made it hard for studio backing, and two investors he had a verbal agreement last year fled after the economic crash.  His agents warned against funding the project himself, but Ford decided to do it anyway: he got complete creative control, something he highly values, out of the deal.

Jefferson Hack

>> Marc Jacobs, Lorenzo Martone Close on $10.4M Manhattan Townhouse —Marc Jacobs and fiance Lorenzo Martone have been househunting in Manhattan for a number of months, but they finally just closed on a townhouse they've been eyeing since March. The 4,400 square foot West Village space — which they purchased for $10.4 million (Marc recently said they've cut back in order to buy the house) comes with private elevator, rear terrace and yard, and a roof terrace.  Jacobs and Martone bought the property — a likeness of which can be previewed here — as a "white box" of empty space. Lily Allen told a London radio station yesterday she plans to take a break from the music industry to focus on a fashion busines, and a concert in March of 2010 will be her last performance for the foreseeable future.

It's  no surprise Allen will join the ranks of celebrities bitten by the fashion bug, as she's been in its inner circle sine Karl Lagerfeld asked her to appear in a series of Chanel accessories ads and to perform live at the Chanel spring runway show.

As for the boutique she plans to open, called Lucy in Disguise, it will be a joint venture with her sister and provide occasion based clothing to rent, not to purchase.

"It's about making fashion democratic," Allen said. "It's about getting really nice clothes but letting people rent them for affordable prices so they can go out and feel like a million dollars and it won't cost them a million dollars."

Farfetch.com one of our favorite online shopping destinations for hard to find designer labels from small boutiques in London, Copenhagen, Milan, and Paris is launching a U.S. website. Only a few stateside shops are currently represented—American Rag, Traffic and Fred Segal in Los Angeles and Assembly, Eva and BBlessing in New York—with hopefully many more to come.

We still plan to visit the European section of the site to score rare online finds like Isabel Marant, Meadham Kirchhoff, Haider Ackermann, and Philippe Audibert from Maria Luisa in Paris and Feathers in London. . .  while we wait patiently for our U.S. obsessions Edon Manor and Pas de Deux to join the e-commerce crowd.
