Eva Herzigova, Ines de la Fressange Go Without Makeup, Retouching for French Elle Covers

>> While the editors at Elle are making lists of what the economy has forced them to give up (bottled water, working out with a trainer) and what necessities they can't bear to part with (haircuts at Fekkai, Wolford tights, monthly facials), their counterparts at French Elle are preparing to do something novel.  This week's issue, which hits newsstands Saturday, features Eva Herzigova, Inès de la Fressange, and actresses Monica Bellucci, Sophie Marceau, Anne Parillaud, Karin Viard, Charlotte Rampling, and Chiara Mastroianni, who all agreed to appear without any makeup or retouching.  Peter Lindbergh did the honors, and inside the magazine, five more unnamed celebrities are promised.*image: source

Iekeliene Stange

>> THE MODELIZER —Iekeliene Stange isn't ready to give up the runway yet, but she's definitely transitioning more and more into photog mode.  She had exhibits in Berlin and London earlier this year, and now she wants "to get into more photojournalism": "Those photographers just don’t exist anymore, who really love to go in there and show the world what’s going on.  Now with television and everything, you have these different types of media that are taking away the interest in photography.

The quality is really missing.  [Before] they actually changed people’s opinions of what was going on. People now look at these pictures of dying children in Africa, and they’re like, “OK, I’ve seen this, I’ve seen that.” [Nylon]

Rick Owens Sounds Off on Young People, LA Fashion Week, and Why He'll Never Collaborate

>> Karl Lagerfeld gives us the quotables, Marc Jacobs gives us a little tabloid-style drama, and Rick Owens, who recently stated that "working out is modern couture," is starting to hold his own in the interview arena — there's nothing like a good, strong opinion.  He recently sat down in his Paris showroom for a ten-minute video interview with Hint, covering everything from what he thinks is "icky" to why we almost didn't have any Rick Owens runway shows.  The highlights:Though he used to be based in LA, he finds designers there "arrogant and demanding."

Though he used to be based in LA, he finds designers there "arrogant and demanding."

LA is great at making sitcoms.  Paris isn't as good as LA is at making sitcoms; every place has their specialty.  And then they do LA Fashion Week, which is incredibly arrogant and demanding.  I mean, these editors have been all over the globe for a couple of weeks [for Fashion Month] and then LA is saying 'Okay, now you have to come here.'  Please, I mean, get off your ass and go to Europe.  I mean, that's what I did and you just have to go where you have to go.  They just don't have the tradition, and they do other things really good, so why do they have to be a fashion capital?  They're the movie capital of the world and they've always been that, can't they just be satisfied with that?

So why Paris over New York?

Excess and being more extreme, Paris is the place to do it.  Not only is it accepted in Paris, it's practically enforced, and I knew that's the kind of designer I wanted to be.  I knew I wasn't going to be Comme des Garcons — I don't think anybody is going to do that anymore — but I knew that I wasn't going to be straight enough for New York.

Doing runway did make him feel like a sell-out. »

We've been on a sportswear kick this season and we're not the only ones. It seems Sergio Rossi designed a range for Puma which recently hit shelves. The colorful and on-trend styles are rendered in satin, giving them a ready-to-wear feel. Although the sneaker pumps are significantly higher in price, the classic sneakers are just under two hundred dollars. Wear them with a monochromatic gray look and you'll be sporty and fashionable.

New MAC Collection Gets Our Hearts Racing

We're not beauty buffs so when we do indulge in makeup it tends to be the same shades that we fancied in middle school: sweet pinks, cherry reds, and for the eyes, only kohl.
New MAC Collection Gets Our Hearts Racing

We're not beauty buffs so when we do indulge in makeup it tends to be the same shades that we fancied in middle school: sweet pinks, cherry reds, and for the eyes, only kohl. When we saw MAC's summer collection, called "A Rose Romance", we were more than excited. Save for a pigment pot with blue dust, called "Mutiny", the collection is entirely made up of those sweet, feminine colors. Check out the entire collection, which hits shelves on April 23rd, in the gallery below. For more MAC beauty, click here

Quote Of The Day: Suzy Menkes Analyzes Michelle Obama's Style

Although she exudes pride both in being the wife of the first African-American president and as a mother of two girls, the only fashion message she seems eager to convey is that she is her own woman.
Although she exudes pride both in being the wife of the first African-American president and as a mother of two girls, the only fashion message she seems eager to convey is that she is her own woman. ..The first lady is making her own contribution to fashion history by dressing as a woman of strong character — rather than as a presidential wife.

Shopping: Printed Boxy Shorts For Summer

There's a place in every woman's wardrobe for a pair of printed, boxy shorts.

There's a place in every woman's wardrobe for a pair of printed, boxy shorts. We love them because you can dress them up with a crisp white blouse and a men's watch or dress them down with a loose racerback tank and pair of motorcycle boots. They're also great for kicking you out of that inevitable summer dress-rut. Above, a couple of our favorites from the season.
