Tao Okamoto Climbs Into the Major League with Ralph Lauren Fall 2009

>> Tao Okamoto was tapped as one of the top faces to watch after Fall 2009 runway season, and designers are clearly enamored.  Phillip Lim recently named her his muse and had all models on his Fall 2009 runway wear wigs cropped just like her hair, and now Ralph Lauren has welcomed her into his stable alongside current mainstays Ubah Hassan (who recently talked about what her Ralph casting was like) and Valentina Zelyaeva for his Fall 2009 campaign.A lot of attention has been placed on bringing more models of color into the mix, but with heavy prevalence placed on black models; Tao's appointment could open the gateway for Asian models in major campaigns.  Her agency promises "this is just the beginning of things to come for Ms.

Founded in 2003, New York City based fashion collective Nom de Guerre has quickly become an integral part of the modern menswear scene. Taking its influences from the myriad New York subcultures, Nom de Guerre creates detailed, quality menswear that avoids trends while maintaining a progressive edge.

Nom de Guerre’s Fall/Winter 2009 collection brings a modern perspective to military inspirations. References to artic survival with details like sherpa linings and shawl collars are perfect for weathering harsh winters in the city. Wool, waxed cotton, and canvas dominate. Double breasted jackets, parkas, vests, and knits layer nicely over simple dress shirts and ties. A palette of gray, olive, and khaki with splashes of black and white instantly turn items into classics. Known for quality workmanship and minimal branding, Nom de Guerre continues to offer some of the best modern menswear in New York.

Quote Of The Day: Sarah Mower On Luella Fall 2009

"Building a brand" can sound like a dull and onerous mission these days, especially for a junior-focused designer who came out of London's free and easy years.
"Building a brand" can sound like a dull and onerous mission these days, especially for a junior-focused designer who came out of London's free and easy years. Yet that's exactly what Bartley is proving herself capable of now. There's value for money in each of her outfits, from all the patchworking of contrasting fabrics that goes on in a single piece (a dress might be made up of a polka-dot top fused to a draped bustier, connected to a wool skirt) down to the Confederate caps and fur pompoms on the toes of her pumps. The sense of continuity shows an impressive business focus, but even better, somehow, is the way Bartley will also break into a bit of gold lamé to keep things "up."

In The Showroom: Aminaka Wilmont Fall 2009

Aminaka Wilmont's sculptural leather jackets and 2007 Fashion Fringe Award are what put the brand on the map, and now they're full steam ahead. This Fall 2009 Maki Aminaka Lofvander and Marcus Wilmont worked with "the perception of time" as inspiration, leading them to use colorful graphic prints, transparent fabrics and extra-long beaded accessories. Of course their signature leather pieces were also present and came in the form of strong-shouldered jackets, vests and thigh-high leggings. Check out images from the collection in the gallery below.

Shopping: Breezy Scallops For Summer

Think of scallops as the girly-girl's take on futurism and you just might warm up to the idea.

Think of scallops as the girly-girl's take on futurism and you just might warm up to the idea. The Spring 09 collections by Chloe and Christopher Kane gave birth to this trend while like minded brands like Stella McCartney and lower-tier retailers like Nine West are giving it momentum. We like the more severe and exaggerated scallops although they seem to get watered down once they make it to an accessible price point. We suppose there's always the DIY route!

Paris Fashion Week: Christian Dior Fall 2009 Video

John Galliano loves taking inspiration from moments in history so rich with possibilities that they make standbys like "The 80's" seem positively lazy.

John Galliano loves taking inspiration from moments in history so rich with possibilities that they make standbys like "The 80's" seem positively lazy. This season, at Christian Dior, it was French designer Paul Poiret's Eastern-influenced designs that served as a starting point for Galliano. Where some designer's might stick to just "The East" in the broadest sense of the term, Galliano looked at The East through Poiret who looked at The East through Europe at the turn of the century. We know, it's more postmodern than The Cheesecake Factory. Check out our video from of the show below, and, our gallery of the individual looks
