New York Times Cuts Back on Fashion Spreads

>> The Wall Street Journal eradicated its fashion bureau in February, and now the New York Times is downsizing at the expense of the Sunday New York Times magazine's fashion editorials.  Beginning with the May 10 issue, the magazine will no longer publish a fashion layout; instead, it will relegate all photography and fashion coverage to T magazines and the weekly Sunday and Thursday Styles sections.

Below, a few pulls from recent spreads, the likes of which we won't be seeing as much anymore.

Givenchy

>> ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL — Adriana Lima has been amping her high fashion cred back up for a while now, scoring appearances in Vogue Paris and Love and sending shockwaves when she walked for Givenchy Fall 2009.  Riccardo Tisci must have liked what he saw, because it sounds like she's been cast in the collection's campaign along with three other girls who a source promises "are incredible as could be for this collection."

Shopping: Isabel Marant Inspires Grungy, French Country

Isabel Marant led the pack this Spring 09 with a grungy, French country collection.

Isabel Marant led the pack this Spring 09 with a grungy, French country collection. Now floral tea dresses, chunky platform sandals and boyfriend trousers are all the rage. To create this look it should be a little bit 90's, a little bit boyish and a little bit prairie. Once pulled together, it will be the kind of outfit you wear all summer long.

RIP

Photographer Shawn Mortensen, 1966-2009

>> Los Angeles-based, self-taught photographer Shawn Mortensen passed away last night, and there's been an outpouring from the industry — Paper's Kim Hastreiter was "shocked" and saddened, and Dazed & Confused was "devastated" to hear the news.  43-year-old Mortensen was originally discovered by i-D founder and editor-in-chief Terry Jones, who "recognized his ability to interpret the streets," and his portraits and editorial work have been scattered among i-D, Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Interview, and British Vogue.  He's also covered the fashion stages of London, Paris, and New York.

At the time of his death, he was working on a series of artwork to debut in June, as well as a collaborative photo-based T-shirt line.

Pucci Fall 2009 Not Unlike Balmain Spring 2009

The Pucci Fall 2009 collection was the first with Peter Dundas at the creative helm and an overall success. He evoked that popular rock star vibe, called up the must-have over-the-knee boot trend, and steered clear of too many obvious house prints. Taking a look at the collection again this morning we were struck at how similar it looks to the eponymous Balmain Spring 09 collection. Check out a few comparisons in the gallery below.

Vogue

Quote Of The Day: On Magazine Covers Past And Present

By today’s standards, the cover of a fashion magazine is about as creative as baby formula.
By today’s standards, the cover of a fashion magazine is about as creative as baby formula. There’s the requisite torso (airbrushed to a fair thee well) positioned to allow for the requisite cover lines, which more often than not contain the number 25. Now compare that to the Vogue cover of January 1950: Jean Patchett’s face reduced to a beauty mark, mouth, eye, brow and nose. If ever there were a visual haiku, this is it. Woman distilled to her essence; the sum of her parts more alluring than the whole.

Shopping: J.Crew Does Office-Ready Patent Shoes For Spring

Call us crazy but as much as we like to look at six-inch platforms in fashion spreads, the thought of wearing them never crosses our mind.

Call us crazy but as much as we like to look at six-inch platforms in fashion spreads, the thought of wearing them never crosses our mind. Running around in New York, even a standard four inch heel can spell trouble. That's why we love J.Crew's Joley shoe--it comes as a chic flat or three inch heel and in a variety of fresh summer colors. On cobblestone streets and subway stairs it makes all the difference.
