Alber Elbaz Shows Lanvin Pre-Fall 2010, Likens Himself to Carrie from Sex and the City

>> Alber Elbaz was in New York City today to show editors his leopard print-riddled Pre-Fall 2010 collection for Lanvin — but apparently it almost wasn't meant to be. Elle's Anne Slowey Tweeted, "Poor Alber! He had to cry to get his pre-fall collection out of US customs!!!"  But editors weren't the only interested parties in attendance at Milk Studios: An Education's Carey Mulligan showed up in jeans and rocker tee, according to Elle's Joe Zee, where she told Elbaz how much she loved her dress — cue the speculation that she might be wearing Lanvin to the Golden Globes.

Elbaz, for his part, was full of his usual witticisms. Of designing the Pre-Fall collection, he said: “Sometimes I feel like Carrie from Sex and the City. I sit in front of my computer and ask myself, ‘Does the daytime have to be boring and grey?’” And he stayed home over the holidays to sketch: "It was pajamas, CNN, and Style.com. It was great."

So far, the posts have followed Richardson home, to St. Barts, and back to NYC — photos show his mother, his trademark flannel shirts, plenty of models, including Daria Werbowy, and of course, plenty of self-portraits: one even depicts Richardson wearing Uggs. As Models.com noted, "Jac is the only girl since Natalia Vodianova to book CK two times in a row. Could Ms. Jagaciak eventually become another iconic CK face right up there with Brooke Shields and Kate Moss?"  Natalia Vodianova last appeared in the Calvin Klein Collection Spring 2007 campaign.

The British Fashion Council and Vogue Designer Fashion Fund announced the shortlist of finalists eligible to win cash prizes and industry mentorship as part of an initiative to help U.K.-based designers take their businesses to the next level. The nominated brands for 2010 include Christopher Kane, Richard Nicoll, Erdem, Marios Schwab, Clements Ribeiro, E.Tautz, Nicholas Kirkwood, and Angel Jackson. As with the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in the U.S., finalists will be evaluated throughout a season, with judges conducting studio visits and attending fashion presentations.

"I think we'll all come with our own criteria of what we think is important for success," Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman said of the judging process. "It's a design talent married with an ability to grow a business and to be able to take part in the international industry as opposed to being on the fringe of it."

Harrods, Burberry, HSBC, Marks and Spencer, and Paul Smith are among the companies that have contributed to the British Fashion Fund this year. Winners will be announced in April, and the judging process will be documented in the May issue of British Vogue.

Anna Wintour Wants to See Rodarte Design for Schiaparelli, and Other Sundry Details from the Mulleavys' New Yorker Profile

>> In the Jan.

>> In the Jan. 18, 2010 edition of the New Yorker, Amanda Fortini profiles Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte and their quest to go against your typical "high gloss, high fashion, glamour, put-together, shiny, perfect — everything too exact" label, in the words of Laura.  The Fall 2009 thigh-high wraparound boots Nicholas Kirkwood created for Rodarte, for example, were meant to evoke "hands wrapped in plastic in a morgue."

Kate told the magazine, "The most unhappy Laura or I have ever been was when we heard we made 'a pretty dress.' We want to make people think, and, once you decide to do that, you will have people that don't like what you're doing."  She later added, "The other day, we were laughing that if we could take our clothes and bury them, and in ten years take them out, we would actually be satisfied [with how they look]."
