>> Sometime model and self-described "young business woman" Amber Atherton set off a new wave of Carine Roitfeld rumors over the weekend, after Twittering a picture of a garment with a Roitfeld-branded hang tag alongside the caption: "Carine Roitfeld's new womenswear label?! or just an odd [Hong Kong] label mishap?!" The same day that London (and Hong Kong)-based Atherton posted the picture, Derek Blasberg Tweeted a picture of Roitfeld at The Wolseley in London alongside hairstylist Luigi Murenu and photographer Iango Henzi, prompting some to draw the conclusion that all three could have been working on a lookbook for Roitfeld's presumed collection.

Karl Lagerfeld Premieres Series of Magnum Ice Cream Commercials Starring Rachel Bilson and Baptiste Giabiconi

>> Last night, Karl Lagerfeld hit New York to debut a series of commercials he directed to promote the European ice cream brand Magnum in the United States. The three minute-long spots feature Rachel Bilson — portraying a fashion model, an art student, and a ballet dancer — as well as Baptiste Giabiconi, but Lagerfeld himself makes no appearances.

A waiter carrying a Diet Coke-filled stemmed glass on a tray followed Lagerfeld around the premiere party last night, as did his bodyguard Sebastien Jondeau. So why did Lagerfeld team up with Magnum, even though he admits he doesn't eat sugar? “I like advertising. I love my job in fashion. I love my job as a photographer, but making films was something I hadn’t done. If I was isolated in one job, I would get bored." Besides, he adds: “I would eat ice cream if I could. I made advertisements for Dom Perignon Champagne, and I don’t drink alcohol. After all, I’m a dress designer and I don’t wear dresses."

Bilson, meanwhile, estimated that probably had around 25 Magnum bars during the course of filming, which was done over three days in Paris on a soundstage and at the Folies Bergere. Lagerfeld said that he was given creative freedom, with the advice that the films' content should be “nothing very sexual,” and the budget for a crew of at least 80 people.

When asked whether there was anything he would not lend his name to, Lagerfeld replied: “I hate the idea of the politically correct, because it is very demode, but I would not make advertisements for something related to meat. Meat, no; fur, yes. I don’t think I would do advertising for condoms, even if it has the same name here [Magnum].”

As for the rumor circulating that he is working on a fragrance called "Paper Passion," intending it to smell like books, Lagerfeld said it's not happening. And his next film to debut is a 30-minute movie, "The Tale of a Fairy," starring Freja Beha Erichsen, Anna Mouglalis, Amanda Harlech, and Kristen McMenamy, and to be shown during the Chanel Cruise 2012 presentation in Cap d'Antibes.

It’s a little stressful because we want it to be perfect but it’s going to be small — close friends and family in Europe.” As for her dress? “I’m really excited because Peter Dundas from Pucci is doing my dress. I saw a few of his sketches already. And I work with [Giuseppe] Zanotti a lot, so they’re sending me a lot of shoes to pick from!” [Modelinia]

>> After reports that Balmain would go with an internal candidate to replace Christophe Decarnin, now comes news that Olivier Rousteing, a key deputy of Decarnin's — not Melanie Ward, as previously suggested — is likely the designer of choice. The contract is in the process, and Rousteing's appointment is expected to be announced as early as next week. Rousteing, "a young and promising creative dynamo," according to WWD's sources, has worked at Balmain since 2009 and was at Roberto Cavalli in Milan for almost six years before that. And as WWD points out, "promoting a number two has become a popular succession strategy in fashion in recent years as the importance of star designers has waned" — take Hannah MacGibbon at Chloe or Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli at Valentino, for example. According to a source familiar with the deal, E! reports, Jolie will be paid "close to $10 million" for the endorsement, believed to be the most lucrative of her career. A Louis Vuitton rep had no comment on the matter, but this campaign sounds like the newest edition of Vuitton's Core Values series, which Leibovitz has always photographed (Whereas for the past number of seasons, Steven Meisel has shot the collection campaign. Rumors have already swirled that he captured six models for the upcoming Fall 2011 Vuitton campaign.).

>> The Canadian used car advertisement that made headlines earlier this week — for placing the tagline "You know you're not the first. But do you really care?" over an image of Tom Ford — has been been pulled, the car salesman Dale Wurfel confirms, declining to further comment. It is not likely that Ford waived image rights for the ads, but it is not known whether the designer took legal action against the Ontario-based Wurfel. A Ford spokesman did not respond to requests for comment.

Ford, meanwhile, was the only fashion figure to make the Time 100 list of influencers this year. Rita Wilson, who walked in Ford's debut womenswear show, wrote in tribute that the designer is a "closet comedian, who can keenly copy an expression, person or walk. He Skypes from his bed, on the opposite end of the planet, to check in with me in mine. But this sexy guy is kind and deeply loyal. Friendships are his other art. No flip-flopping. No fly by night. Tom has manners that are rare these days. Handwritten notes are common for the man who wore a three-piece suit every day while directing his visionary first film, A Single Man."

The e-tailer's founder, Kris Kim, has designed a ready-to-wear line in the past, and says now: "We're designing a private label. We haven't talked about it yet, but it will be a small women's ready to wear collection with the same point of view as the store. The price points are up in the air." [Daily Front Row]

>> The annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner collaborations kick off today — but this year, instead of Gap, J.Crew is the partner of choice. Billy Reid's 7-piece menswear collection is already online and runs through May, while Prabal Gurung's five-piece collection will be available online and in select J.Crew stores in June, and Borgo's pieces hit in July.

While Borgo's and Gurung's pieces have yet to be previewed, all three designers re-created pieces from their previous collections in new colors and materials for the collaboration, and J.Crew head of women's design Marissa Webb wore a pair of pants from Gurung's J.Crew collection to the launch party last night.

As for prices, Gurung says of his pieces: "Everything is under $500. I'm going to buy it for my sister, my cousins — everyone." And Borgo added: "I'm just excited to see what happens with this new customer. The cross-pollination of places like J.Crew and luxury brands — it's part of modern dressing."
