Alessandro Dell'Acqua has a penchant for mixing feminine with masculine, and for Spring 2013 he worked those juxtaposing forces into a mostly crisp lineup of boxy collared tops, round-shouldered jackets, t-shirt dresses, and superslim pencil skirts. In mixed panels of lace, jacquard, and sheer knits they were plenty appealing, and — at their most successful — felt sporty and fresh.

Alberta Ferretti Spring 2013

Consider Spring 2013 Alberta Ferretti's mermaid moment.
Alberta Ferretti Spring 2013 | Runway

Consider Spring 2013 Alberta Ferretti's mermaid moment. In everything from her color palette to her embellishments to the staging of her show in Milan Wednesday afternoon, Ferretti brought beauty from the ocean onto the catwalk.

A screen played images of rising bubbles, which provided a watery backdrop for the pearly white ensembles that opened the show. Some of these included a silvery beaded fringe that Ferretti obscured with a layer of sheer organza. Some lace pieces got the same overlay or organza, and the two materials combined in a variety of other pieces in the collection.

Still, where this offering shines is its highly detailed evening wear. One cocktail frock is covered shoulder to hem with beads, sequins, and paillettes that from far away resembled a very glamorous fish, while other dresses featured big swatches of sequined fisherman's netting. The models who wore those dresses looked like captured mermaids being brought to the surface.

Eddie Borgo Fall 2012 Campaign Stars Alison Mosshart

Eddie Borgo "was listening to The Kills' new album a lot" while designing his Fall 2012 jewelry collection, so it's no wonder the band's lead singer, Alison Mosshart, ended up as his campaign star.

Borgo's collection is in part inspired by New York City and "the joints, railways, tunnels, and engineering systems that hold it together," he says. "But, in another way, the collection also is always inspired by the few true personalities that make up the culture of the city — the way in which music, specifically, colors the attitudes and outlook of its people. Alison could not be a better representation of rock music today."

Mosshart isn't the first city girl Borgo has used for his campaign. In the past, Kate Lanphear, Giovanna Battaglia, and Cecilia Dean have posed for the ads. A look at Mosshart's campaign here in the gallery.

Gucci Spring 2013

Frida Giannini must be in a good mood.
Gucci Spring 2013 | Runway

Frida Giannini must be in a good mood. The sunny palette she employed for Gucci's Spring 2013 collection is indicative of an optimistic state of mind — and after last season's rich, glamorous outing of all black everything, this house needed a happy jolt of color.

The hot pinks, seafoam greens, lemon yellows, and shades of blue Giannini sent down the runway in Milan this afternoon were spot-on trend with this season's wider color story. But where others created volume from the waist down, this designer focused on sleeves and necklines. Ruffles added a flirtatious softness to shirts and dresses — on one, the treatment started at the neck and snaked all the way down the wearer's right arm. Bishop and angel sleeves abounded on solid colored garments, too — and it was hard not to appreciate that these effects weren't extended to the few printed garments in the collection.

But Giannini can still do not-so-basic black. Toward the end of the collection, she phased in two dresses and some separates in the color that incorporated her sleeves and ruffles. They were a lovely homage to Gucci's modern black moment (see: Tom Ford in the late '90s), but we wouldn't have missed them.
